Welcome to Valley Midwifery Group's website.

We are a collective of midwives who provide care to woman in the Fraser Valley, serving the communities of Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack. Our practice has served hundreds of women & families since 1998.

Midwifery services are completely free to BC residents with Personal Health Numbers. Women who choose Valley Midwifery Group receive skilled and comprehensive care throughout pregnancy, their labour and birth, and the first 6 weeks after.

What is a midwife?

The practice of midwifery has a long and respected history in our world. In old English midwife means “with women”. From antiquity, midwives have assisted women through pregnancy, birth and early parenting and we continue to honour the tradition of being “with women”.

The processes of conception, pregnancy, labour, birth and breastfeeding are amazing examples of nature’s power at its most profound. We believe each women’s experience of pregnancy, labour and birth are personal and life altering events that offer tremendous opportunities to each woman, her family and her community. Pregnancy, labour and birth are not usually medical events. We believe in the innate strength and ability of women to give birth. Women and their partners have the right and responsibility to make informed, intelligent, and sensitive decisions about the manner in which they choose to give birth.

Fitting into this journey, midwifery care involvers partnering with women ~ and respect each woman and each birth as unique. Midwifery care promotes self-care, personal growth, awareness, and confidence delivered in a manner that is flexible, creative, empowering and supportive.

Our role is to provide skilled council, faith in each woman’s tremendous capacity, a listening ear and the wisdom of experience. We provide attentive, gentle and expert guidance throughout each woman’s journey of pregnancy, labour, birth, breastfeeding, and early parenting.
