The midwifery model typically provides 30 – 60 minute prenatal
visits, continuous labour support, choice of birth place & in
home postpartum follow up. We are committed to a collaborative approach
that supports informed decision making introducing high touch low
tech care. This approach is associated with lower intervention rates
including minimal need for drugs in labour, fewer inductions of
labour, augmentation of labour, surgical birth like caesarian section,
forceps and vacuum, significantly low rates of episiotomy and perineal
tears. Midwifery clients are highly likely to breastfeed and overall
have high satisfaction with their care.
What do Registered Midwives do?
- Full scope care for health low risk women
- Collaborative / Shared care (with an Obstetrician) for women
with health challenges or pregnancy related risks.
- Timely and appropriate referrals when needed.
Note: There are a few health conditions that exclude
women from midwifery care. For example: Women who have significant
health issues such as insulin dependant diabetes, cardiac or kidney
disease are at risk and are best served by a specialized physician
obstetrician or perinatologist. Midwives review each woman’s
health history and advise if there are circumstances that need further
management or transfer of care to a specialist.
